Tesla Motors sells first Roadster in Australia

Electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla Motors Inc. said Monday it delivered its first vehicle in Australia, marking its entry into that market.

The company, which sold stock to the public for the first time earlier this month, said it sold its Roadster electric sports car to Australian technology entrepreneur Simon Hackett.

The Roadster, which starts at more than $100,000 and is Tesla's only vehicle for sale, is now approved for Australian roadways and available to customers there, the company said. The car goes from zero to 100km in less than four seconds, Tesla says, and can travel more than 380 kilometers on a single charge. The Roadster plugs into any conventional socket and can be charged with solar, hydro or wind energy.

Tesla says it has sold more than 1,200 Roadsters to customers in at least 28 countries.

Company shares were selling for $20.90 in afternoon trading.
