Ethanol Powered Mazda Furai Racecar

This is a concept vehicle which few of us will ever drive. The Furai is Mazda’s next hope in the future of car racing. While going green on the race track is not exactly an eco-minded endeavor, we’re still intrigued that this vehicle can be fully powered by ethanol. The very cool looking performance sports car shows that if ethanol has a place in the auto industry, that place is in the car racing arena.

It is a powerful machine, capable of achieving 60mph in about 3.2 seconds, and its maximum speed is 172mph. Instead of working from a regular chassis, the manufacturer decided to begin with a fully formed Courage C65 chassis, Mazda’s chassis of choice. The vehicle weighs a bit less than a ton, and its engine produces around 460bhp.

The Furai, while fully functioning, is never going to make it past the concept stage. It is simply a promotional vehicle. But at least they fitted it with an ethanol engine. There is no doubt that ethanol is a dicey proposition as a fuel source for vehicles. The fact is, that it can cause a number of problems if it’s sourcing is not managed properly. However, it is a potential stopgap replacement to our energy problems.

2011 Mazda MX-5 GT Race Car

This is the new Mazda MX-5 GT, the fastest, lightest Mazda-produced MX-5 ever. Unfortunately, it's also the company's new entry for this year's Britcar MSA British Endurance Championship, so you won't be seeing it on the road anytime soon.

Designed to compete in this year’s Britcar MSA British Endurance Championship, the standard MX-5 has been completely reworked to FIA specifications. It features a modified version of Mazda’s 2.0-litre in-line four, developing 275bhp - up 117bhp on the road going version - and mated to a six-speed sequential paddle shift ’box.

The car is also fitted with FIA-spec gear such as roll cage, racing seats with harness, external electric cut-off and fire extinguisher, competition alloy wheels and steering wheel, and safety latches for the bonnet and boot lid.

Under the bonnet is seriously tuned and tweaked 2.0-litre engine. Rather than 158bhp the four-cylinder engine now produces 275bhp. It also sits lower in the racer, and drives the rear wheels via a six-speed sequential gearbox.

The Mazda MX-5 GT will compete in its first race at the Britcar MSA British Endurance Championship three-hour endurance race at Silverstone, scheduled to start at 3:00pm on March 26.

MAZDA MX-5 GT BREAKS COVER

  • Mazda MX-5 GT entry into Britcar MSA British Endurance Championship 2011
  • Lightweight Mazda MX-5 GT race car to challenge conventional thinking
  • Mazda MX-5 GT remains true to its roots but with more power and performance

Mazda is set to challenge Aston Martin, Porsche, Lotus, and BMW on the race track with its lightweight Mazda MX-5 GT entry in the Britcar MSA British Endurance Championship 2011.

Weighing in at just 850kg, the Mazda MX-5 GT race car will accelerate from 0-to-60mph in just three seconds and hit a top speed of 160mph. The build of the car has been an engineering challenge to get the weight as low as possible using Mazda's gram strategy as the inspiration. Jota Sport examined every nut and bolt to reduce component weight and then match the power to the weight to give the lightest and most powerful MX-5 ever built.

An important aspect of the build was to ensure the Mazda MX-5 still remains true to its roots: great handling, huge fun-to-drive and the ability to challenge bigger more powerful competition, but at an affordable cost. The Mazda GT car ticks all those boxes and is now set to demonstrate its challenger spirit on the track.

Jota Sport, the race engineering team that will run the cars in the 2011 series, took 400 hours to build the shell to a specification that ensured it was 17 times stronger than required by the FIA. During the development they faced a number of engineering challenges such as suspension adjustments, integrating the six speed sequential gearbox, and lowering the engine. Weight saving strategies such as, the removal of interior components, reducing component weight and dipping the shell in acid lost 15kg from the MX-5 race car.

The completed MX-5 GT features a modified Mazda engine to produce 275bhp, a six speed sequential paddle shift gearbox, carbon doors and Polycarbonate windows. On the exterior, the Mazda MX-5 GT boasts a Spirited Green metallic body colour - a first on the MX-5 for Mazda UK - complimented by Jota Sport corporate coloured liveries in orange and grey.

Mazda is renowned for challenging conventions so the motivation to develop a MX-5 GT car comes naturally. It also comes at a time when Mazda has recently celebrated a number of milestones for MX-5 including its 21st anniversary and producing 900,000 MX-5 units globally since its introduction in 1989, with over 10 percent of global MX-5 sales from Britain. Meanwhile, the Mazda MX-5 continues to hold the Guinness World Record as the world's best?selling roadster - testament to its continued popularity with British open top sports car fans.

The Britcar MSA British Endurance Championship is contested over nine races from March to November including a race at the Spa Francorchamps circuit in Belgium. The first race is a three hour endurance race at Silverstone next weekend, Saturday 26 March 2011, starting at 3.00pm.

This is the fourth time that Mazda has entered Britcar and this year the Mazda MX-5 GT car will be driven by two Mazda works drivers including experienced Mazda racing driver Mark Ticehurst, 39 from Hassocks, West Sussex and Auto Express journalist and racing driver Owen Mildenhall.

"The MX-5 production race car's modest power output, bullet proof reliability and nimble handling demonstrated last year how the MX-5 can be competitive against some of the purpose-built Lotus, VW and BMW race cars. With a higher power output combined with the durability, reliability and handling attributes that the MX-5 is renowned for; the MX-5 GT race car will be strong contender against the more powerful race cars in its class," comments Graeme Fudge, PR Director, Mazda UK.

The Mazda MX-5 GT car, prepared by Tunbridge Wells-based Jota Sport features the mandatory FIA approved safety equipment including a roll cage, race seats and harness, external electric cut-off and fire extinguisher, safety catches on the bonnet and boot lids, competition steering wheel and alloy wheels, while the running gear, rear axle, gearbox and engine have been modified to enhance performance.

Mazda BT-50

autostream.blogspot.com

In the middle of October on a showroom in Australia Mazda will present new generation of pickup BT-50. Why in Australia, instead of, say, in Paris? The reasons can be different. One of them is that in Paris will be big amount of possible premieres and BT-50 among them will simply get lost. Besides, it is not necessary to forget that Australians, unlike the same Europeans, very much love pickups.

Photos of new generation of Mazda BT-50 while aren't present. Japanese have extended only the first design drawings of this model. But also on them it is clear that BT-50 will receive absolutely new appearance (the design of the car promises to be rather aggressive), and the interior too should be other.

As usual, new BT-50 will be issued both with unary and one-and-a-half, and with a double cabin. Information on engines which can appear under a cowl of this pickup while isn't present (now the car has the 2,5-liter diesel engine, 143 h.p.).

2010 Mazda Sport Cars Coupe Shinari Concept Car

Mazda launched the 2010 Shinari sports cars coupe at the Paris Motor Show in early October, a four door concept car that shows the new design. This design as well as to replace the Nagare design. Mazda Shinari Concept represents the profound connection of driver and machine and the beginning of Mazda's latest design theme 'KODO-Soul in Motion'. Shinari exhibits a functional aesthetic that will continue to evolve as Mazda continues to define its next generation of vehicles.

The development of the Shinari Concept was actually a collaboration between three of Mazda’s design centers in Japan, Germany and the United States. Mazda also said it is working to improve the quality level of its interiors for future vehicles. With 2010 Mazda Sport Cars Coupe Shinari Concept Car as the first step, Ikuo Maeda, general manager of Mazda's design division, aims to create original Mazda designs that will be recognized around the world. He summarizes his resolve in the following words:
"My goal is to create designs that people can point to proudly and say, 'This is a Mazda design'. There is no need for Mazda to build cars for people who are only concerned with 'style' and 'trends'. Whether working on sports cars or compact cars, I have always worked to create designs that evoke an emotional response in people and I hope to keep doing the same as I remain fully committed to develop designs for people who love and admire cars. It is my personal belief that the only way to create designs that fundamentally connect with people and to create designs they love, is if the people creating them are absolutely passionate about cars and are willing to make that passion a firm policy for design expression.
The Mazda Shinari is a pure design concept model of a four-door, four-seater sport cars coupe which perfectly expresses the 'KODO - Soul of Motion' design theme in a graceful and carefree form. All of Mazda Shinari Concept's body surfaces appear as if constantly undergoing transformation. There is no static shape to be found, as if the car is in perpetual motion. For instance the subtle control of the angle of the upper surface of the side sill, from the front to the rear, results in a form that suggests a flash of speed along the body of the car. Aerodynamic performance was a major priority for Mazda Shinari Concept, and the centre of the lower sections - on both the front and rear bumpers - are designed to optimize the flow of air along the underbody of the car.

The principle of 'dedicated driving ergonomics' is further reflected in the car's next generation Human Machine Interface (HMI). The availability of smaller electronic components has allowed Mazda Shinari Concept's designers to create a floating HMI three-dimensional display; a design element that represents the very latest HMI technology . The system offers three distinct modes: 'Business, Pleasure and Sport'.
Yasushi Nakamuta, the chief designer who led the design of the third generation Mazda MX-5, was the first to begin the ideation of the Mazda Shinari Concept: "The challenge for us was to create an innovative new expression for energetic and powerful movement; something that we had never attempted before. We began by developing the design around the image of a predator, as it strikes at its prey, or the stabbing movement in kendo, Japanese fencing, to express the instant where accumulated force is released.
Ikuo Maeda say, "Further, I consider it vitally important to have an awareness of Japanese originality in designing cars for Mazda. This is not merely about incorporating traditional Japanese elements into car design. I believe in reflecting the Japanese spirit in car designs as part of a subconscious practice. So, while I consider where this may lead in the future, my plan is to create cars that will be instantly recognizable as a Mazda, even when viewed at a distance. My ultimate goal is to create a brand presence that car lovers around the world recognize as representing both Mazda originality and Japanese originality. Future Mazda's will move people physically and emotionally - this is 'KODO - Soul of Motion'."

Mazda Shinari Concept

Mazda has releases its future design direction with the sleek Shinari concept car. which will make its public debut at the Paris Motor Show at the end of September. The stylish four-door coupe previews the look of the next generation of Mazdas and ushers in a new design language.

With the launch of the new concept, Mazda also announced that the company’s future design language will be described by the word Kodo, which is Japanese for soul of motion. Talking about the new design language, Ikuo Maeda, general manager of Mazda Motor Corp.’s design division said: "this design will lead to the next generation of Mazda design and will lead to other elements."

The coupe shows the future face of Mazda's family of vehicles -- an aluminum signature wing, the line that runs through the headlights and under the grille -- as well as the overall styling trend for future production models.

The Shinari as a four-door coupe is a clear signal that Mazda is targeting the premium segment where similar vehicles such as the Aston Martin Rapide, Porsche Panamera and upcoming Fisker Karma already reside. In order to do so Mazda officials ackowledged that interior quality levels must improve.

The company has not released any official information on the Mazda Shinari yet. When it will, we'll be able to show you high resolution images of the Mazda Shinari and to offer a full set of details on the new concept.

Press Release

In a move towards personalization, Mazda Canada is offering something unique when it comes to car accessories for the Mazda2: vinyl decal "Skins" that are applied to the outside of the car.

As the new entry point into Mazda's line-up, the all-new 2011 Mazda2 will appeal to a younger generation of drivers who value individuality and self-expression, especially when it comes to their vehicles. For that reason, Mazda Canada assembled a youth marketing committee made up of eight young men and women from different departments within the company, who fit the Generation-Y demographic. They were charged with coming up with launch ideas for the Mazda2, as the economical and sporty subcompact has strong appeal to Canadians in their twenties and early thirties.

One of the youth committee’s ideas was the Mazda Skins program. Exclusive to the Canadian market, the Skins program offers Mazda2 owners the ability to add their personal style to their car by applying a unique vinyl decal ‘Skin’ design. Owners can choose from one of four themes: three music-based themes (Rock, Pop and Urban) and one performance-inspired theme (Speed). Each Skins design comes in three different sizes (small, medium and large) and seven different colours to match the body colours of the Mazda2, for a total of 84 different decal variations! Depending on the size, the cost is $375, $455 or $595 plus installation.

“Today’s young people are all about standing out from the crowd, and expressing their own style and taste,” says David Klan, Senior Director of Marketing and Sales at Mazda Canada Inc. “Demonstrating their ‘personal brand’ is important, and we are offering them a unique new means of self-expression with both our Skins program as well as our Mazda2 Yozora special edition.”

Mazda2 owners will be able to choose their Skin theme, colour and size at www.mazdaskins.ca. Application happens at the dealership and takes approximately an hour, depending on the size. The Skins are made from high-quality 3M automotive vinyl, are safe on the vehicle’s paint and are included in the vehicle’s 3-year, 80,000 km warranty.

Originally launched in 2007, the Mazda2 was first introduced in Europe, Japan and Australia. Since then, it has been highly acclaimed throughout the world, winning 48 automotive awards, including “Car of the Year” accolades in many markets and, most notably, the “2008 World Car of the Year.” Total global sales of the Mazda2 have surpassed 400,000 units in the three years since its introduction. The all-new 2011 Mazda2 is in Canadian dealerships now.

2010 mazda cx7

Mazda has a small problem with its rakish, buttoned-down CX-7 crossover. With the 244hp, 2.3-liter turbocharged engine under the hood, the CX-7 delivers on the promise of its sporty styling and nicely tuned chassis. It's definitely one of the more entertaining crossovers to drive, but that fun comes at a price. With more than 3900 lb to haul around, the tightly wound turbo-four sucks gas like a six. The EPA mpg rating for the all-wheel drive CX-7s is an unremarkable 17/23 city/highway.

2010 Mazda CX-9

Mazda CX9 (2010) has been inaugurated at New York International Auto Show. 2010 Mazda CX9 may output 273 hp at 6250 rpm and 270 lb-ft of maximum torque at 4250 rpm, because it is powered by a 3.7-liter V6 engine mated to an Aisin six-speed transmission-given Sport AT automatic with manual-mode.

Mazda CX9 (2010) equipped with Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), a Traction Control System (TCS), ABS and EBD.

2010 Mazda CX9 is equipped with a list of equipment including 4.3-inch color LCD screen full of new, two-stage seat heaters, climate control newly developed, and Advanced keyless entry and start system fob key system.

Self-POWER, REFINED PERFORMANCE

The 2010 Mazda CX-9 is powered by the engine 273 horsepower 3.7-liter V6, making the most complex searches easy and enjoyable as possible. Short-stroke 60-degree V6 is state-of-the-art-all. Advanced features including die-cast aluminum block with cast-in iron cylinder liners and aluminum cylinder heads for minimal weight. valvetrain includes chain-driven overhead camshafts dual for minimal maintenance, four valves-per-cylinder with bucket-type actuators directly acting, and variable intake valve timing. A high 10.3:1 compression ratio maximizes efficiency and power output while the throttle is electronically controlled for instantaneous response. Two close-coupled catalytic converters cleanse the exhaust without inhibiting power.

Computer-assisted analysis of a wide-technique is used to configure the cylinder block casting, to shape intake and exhaust ports, and to design a high volume exhaust system fitted with three large mufflers. Very low back pressure is one reason why the power curve was still rising at the 6500-rpm redline. In addition, forged-steel crankshaft with induction-hard journal, full of the counterweights. Engineering details even extend to the cam-drive sprocket roller chain with rubber coated for quiet operation.

A peak power of 273 horsepower at 6250 rpm to give the Mazda CX-9 with sparkling accelerating and passing performance. -Ft of torque curve continues to 250 pounds from 3000 to 6000 rpm and peaks with 270 lb-ft at 4250 rpm.

To combine excellent acceleration and high fuel mileage, Mazda CX-9, including a six-speed Aisin-awarded Sport AT automatic transmission with manual mode as standard equipment. area ratios maximize flexibility by providing enthusiastic launch acceleration with quiet cruising. Both the second overdrive gear ratio.

Front-wheel drive is standard on the Mazda CX-9 for excellent drivability, with Mazda's Active Torque All-Wheel Drive optionally available. Also used in the Mazda CX-7 crossover SUV, the system is changing rapidly adjust traction needs by monitoring wheel slippage, steering angle, yaw rate, lateral acceleration and available driveline torque. In normal driving, 100-percent of the torque sent to front-wheel drive. During the acceleration of aggressive or when one front wheel is on the verge of slip, controlled percentage of the available torque is directed to the rear axle.

A power take-off device integrated with the transaxle Mazda CX-9's spins a drive shaft attached to an active coupling built into the rear differential. Instructed by the control module, multi-plate clutch servo can be controlled routes from zero to 50 percent of available torque to the rear wheels.

CHASSIS ENGINEERED FOR SAFETY AND PERFORMANCE

The Mazda CX-9 has received the U.S. government’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) highest possible ratings in frontal and side impact crashes - five stars. In addition, both the FWD and AWD versions of the Mazda CX-9 received four-star rollover resistance ratings. With five stars to back it up, it comes as no surprise that Mazda’s advanced engineering provides Mazda CX-9 with one of the safest unibodies on the market.

Guiding development principles are:

Front frame rails that are large in section and as straight as possible.
A front subframe (supporting the powertrain, suspension, and steering equipment) attached to the unibody at six widely separated points. A forward extension integral to the subframe helps it to more effectively absorb collision energy.
B-pillars securely anchored to members in the floor and rocker areas with increased cross-section for all load-bearing members.
Rear frame rails positioned higher and configured as straight as possible.
Bumper reinforcement manufactured using a hot-stamping technique.
More than a dozen structural members in the floor and roof pillars made of high-tensile steel. Multiple steel reinforcements in the roof and a triple-H-shaped floor structure help absorb side-impact energy.
A fuel tank positioned near the middle of the vehicle and surrounded by multiple torque box crossmembers. Maximum overlap between the doors and the unibody to minimize side-impact intrusion. Energy absorbing material on front and rear door trim diminishes the transfer of impact loads to occupants.
Spot welds, laser welding in high-stress areas, and weld bonding (combination of welding and structural adhesives) to improve unibody stiffness.
Acoustical foam filler applied to internal cavities to block noise transmission from underbody into cabin areas.
Highly rigid damping sheet applied to large expanses of the floor pan to eliminate resonance and to block road noise.

For Mazda CX-9 to wear the Mazda brand symbol, it had to be more than just another crossover SUV. It had to be a true Mazda, embodying the company’s philosophy “Soul of a Sports Car.” And so engineers determined Mazda CX-9 had to have an independent suspension on all four corners.

In front, the perimeter frame mounted to the unibody through six rubber isolators supports the powertrain, the engine-speed-sensitive rack-and-pinion power steering, and a low friction strut-type suspension system using coil springs. The multilink rear suspension consists of one trailing arm and three lateral locating links per side. To minimize cargo-compartment intrusion and permit a wider load space, the rear coil spring is positioned between the lower lateral links and the unibody. A damper is located as close as possible to each rear wheel to provide excellent motion control with minimal friction. Anti-roll bars at each end maximize agility and control during assertive driving.

Twenty-inch, V-rated, low-profile radial tires (P245/50R-20) are standard equipment on the top Grand Touring model while Sport and Touring editions roll on P245/60R-18 tires. As a result, Mazda CX-9 looks and feels unusually nimble for its size and is the clear class leader for driving pleasure.

EYES IN THE BACK OF YOUR HEAD

The Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) system supports the driver when changing lanes on roads and highways. At speeds of 20 mph or more, the system monitors areas on both sides of the vehicle to the rear. When a vehicle enters the detection area on either side, the BSM notifies the driver by illuminating a warning light located in the door mirror in the same side. If the driver then activates the turn signal, indicating a move in the same direction, the warning light will flash and the system will also sound an audible alert to immediately inform the driver of the potential danger in changing lanes.

ROOM ENOUGH FOR THEIR CHILDREN AND FRIENDS

Mazda CX-9 rides on 113.2-inch wheelbase, one of the longest in this segment, providing easy access to three rows of seating. There is plenty of room for adults in every position and enough cargo space to accommodate modern American families. Under the sleek exterior is an interior that will impress demanding customers with its space, utility, versatility, and premium features.

For ease of accommodations for all drivers, the driver's seat and steering column move quickly and easily with a long range adjustment. 60-40 split second row with three in comfort and offers approximately five-inches of travel slides lengthwise and lay back. In the third row 50-50 split-position seat and foot space is one of the leaders in class in numbers and real comfort. Log into the third row is easy, with access to almost 26 inches of space between the second row seats folded and the C-pillars. Even with the third row occupied, the Mazda CX-9 provides 17.2 cubic feet of cargo capacity, eclipsing many large sedan trunks. Both the second and third-row seats fold flat to allow additional storage all the way up to the rear of the front seat.

Extra thought is invested in small details, like how the release of the Mazda CX-9 seats are configured. For example, to release second-row seat to enter the third row requires only one simple hand motion to unlatch the seat and move forward. Similarly, a clever strap attached behind the third row seat backrest serves as both a release for folding chairs and means of pulling back upright again.

SAFETY WITH ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY

Safety features Mazda CX-9 is highlighted by advanced Roll Stability Control (RSC) system that uses both body-roll rate and the wheel speed sensors to determine when corrective action is required. Instantaneous torque decline, combined with an automatic brake application, helping to restore the Mazda CX-9 for the balance.

Four-wheel ventilated disc brakes including Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) to prevent the use of prison during an emergency. Dual-caliper front brake pistons operate together with a 12.6-inch ventilated rotors with diameter of 1.1 inches thick. single piston rear calipers squeeze 12.8-inch diameter by 0.71-inch thick rotors, also ventilated. Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD) control the distribution front-to-rear braking force to take full advantage of available traction during stops. In the event the driver applies the brakes quickly in an emergency but with sufficient force to perform the function of ABS, brake assist takes over the function to stop the vehicle as soon as possible. To provide drivers with a confident feel during stops, the system of the Mazda CX-9's braking an extra-rigid so that deceleration is more directly proportional to pedal pressure than pedal travel. Benefit with a more linear response enhanced controllability.

When excessive wheel slippage is detected, a Traction Control System (TCS) automatically reduces driveline torque to help restore traction. Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) reduces driveline torque and automatically applies one or more brakes to minimize under or over-steer during emergency maneuvers.

Protection is provided by the party-curtain airbags, active sensors, which extend from first to third line. This restriction inflatable lateral spreading in a collision or a rollover to reduce the chance of injury and limb or head ejection. Inflation is maintained for about six seconds for maximum effectiveness, although the only way this system works well is when used in combination with seatbelts. Pretensioner devices automatically remove slack from the belt system immediately after the collision moderate or greater frontal and load limiters are incorporated to provide some give as the occupant moves forward. The front headrests Mazda CX-9's include new design features, which are designed primarily to reduce neck injuries during rear impacts.

Mazda CX-9 strong unibody uses the Mazda Advanced Impact-energy Distribution and Absorption System to help protect the cabin from deformation in case of danger of collision.

The combination of large parts, some of which are made of high tensile steel, envelope the passenger compartment to absorb impact energy while guard against interference.

TRIM AND ENTERTAINMENT FEATURES

Mazda CX-9 is offered in three trim levels: Sport, Touring and Grand Touring. All models include air conditioning, power windows, power door locks with remote keyless entry, trip computer, cruise control, six airbags, Bluetooth ® phone capabilities and choice of black or beige interior color.

Mazda CX-9 Sport is equipped with 18-inch aluminum wheels and tires, halogen lamps, the ability of Bluetooth ® hands-free phone and upholstery. Power front seat adjusters are optional.
